In the middle of the nineteenth century, Richard Allen correctly argued that slavery and any prejudice based on skin color were not in synch with Christian teachings. To right this wrong, he split from the Methodist church and created the African Methodist Episcopalian Church. The motto of the new church -- God our Father, Christ our Redeemer, man our Brother -- reflects its emphasis both on scripture and on social and racial equality. Bethel African Methodist Episcopalian's San Francisco church takes up a big hunk of a block in the neighborhood between the Civic Center and the Fillmore, surrounded by public housing, old Victorians and a childrens playground. Its quiet environs make the modern, angular building on the corner of Laguna and Golden Gate look a little foreboding, but the Reverend J. Edgar Boyd welcomes everyone to the church. You can get some religion every Sunday at 8AM and 11AM and the choir, which definitely has the spirit, is a bonus. -- Samantha Schoech
