An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

great place for birthday!
By jnhnurse on 02/18/2008
My boyfriend and I went to San Francisco from LA for weekend trip for his birthday. I found this place on the internet, the reviews seemed pretty good, and I was interested in going somewhere romantic and different. When you go to this restaurant, it is truly in an alley. Except for a lighted sign saying Bix, the alley seemed deserted. But when we pulled up, the valet came out immediately. We opened up the dark door and were immediately into a classy, cool place for dinner. We requested to sit up in the balcony in a booth, which I recommend. Soft jazz could be heard, but didn't overpower. The restaurant is small, but the way it is constructed you here a lot of conversation, but can still enjoy the conversation easily at your own table. I got the pork chop dinner, with kale spinach and new potatoes, and it was the best I've had. My boyfriend got the lobster spaghetti which had a great sauce. We also tried the steak tartare for appetizer that was prepared tableside, different and yummy. We topped the night by splitting the "little peanut butter sundae", very nice way to end the meal. We had great service, and they did some extra touches (incuding have card on table saying "happy birthday" and bringing out dessert with candle so my honey could make birthday wish. If you are looking for a great place for an evening meal, I highly recommend.

Great Night!
By lisaanni555 on 08/31/2007
This place was great. We had a reservation at 9pm on 8/25 and we arrived an hour early due to "tired' feet. The staff was very accomodating and seated us right away. Our waiter, doug, was funny, gave great recommendations and knew the menu items well. We loved the entrees, drinks, and dessert. The music was a bonus, i highly recommend Bix. Thanks for a great evening and service :)

BAD NIGHT
By astmikeschmid on 07/31/2006
A BDAY CELEBRATION DINNER - 7 PEOPLE-- THE FOOD WAS GOOD, BUT THE SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE. THE WAITER WAS WITHOUT PERSONALITY, AND WE HAD TO LOOK FOR SOMEONE TO BRING OUR WINE OVER FROM THE BUCKET EVERY TIME. LUCKILY THE RED WINE WAS ON THE TABLE, SO WE COULD POUR IT OURSELVES, ALSO HAD TO YELL FOR COFFEE SERVICE. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

GREAT CHOW AND ARM WRESTLING
By opbjr on 04/29/2006
Take off your shirt and be ready to show some muscle when you walk into BIX! The owner, Bix, will probably want to drink shots with you, but watch out for his left he can kick your fannie ! The food was great, I had the roasted lamb with polenta and a great bottle of 1995 Chateau Lafete Rothchild with a coke back! For desert I ate an entire cake with no hands--face only! I beat Bix left handed and we tied on the right hand! A wonderful sophisticated place where you can still take off your shirt!
