Chez Panisse opened its doors in 1971, started by Alice Waters and a band of idealistic friends. A neighborhood bistro named after a character in Marcel Pagnol's 1930's trilogy of movies (?Marius,? ?Fanny,? and ?Cesar?), the Restaurant and Café are a homage to the sentiment, comedy and informality of these classic films. From the beginning, Alice and her partners tried to do things the way they would like them done at a dinner party at home. Through the years, Chez Panisse has stayed true to this original inspiration and is now part of the global Slow Food movement. Chez Panisse Restaurant, located downstairs, is open for dinner Monday through Saturday, by reservation only. The set menu changes every night, reflecting the season. Our produce, meat, poultry, and fish come from farms, ranches, and fisheries guided by principles of sustainability.

california cuisine
By timmysouthpark on 02/03/2007
I must inform the editors that California cuisine started in the late twenties at a rest stop in Vacaville, called the Nut Tree. An unique mixture of seasonal fruits and vegtables fused with creative talents originated the original California taste for mixing cultural flavors.

fresh seasonal fabulous
By tomalyse on 07/12/2006
Chez Panisse shops local farmers for fresh organic produce, meats poultry and dairy. They do not cover things with mass quanitites of butter like some upscale restaurants in order to make things taste great. Instead, with simple, fresh, pure ingredients they make magic happen! After all these years, we have never had anything less than a solid, great meal in a peaceful ambience with top notch, friendly service. Their menu has inspired us to try new interesting dishes and to cook healthier and more simply at home as well.

Conservative

This place reeks left wing ideology, not delectable cuisine. "Berkley ambience" is code for: " Being in the presence of like minded liberal phonies will, hopefully make you accepting of and foolish enough to pay these ridiculous prices. This is indeed a high price to pay for self satisfaction. This is hard to swallow- even with the finest wine.

SPECATACULARLY GOOD, AGAIN
By griffontype on 10/11/2004
We have lived all over the world. We've eaten in the fine restaurants wherever we've been. From "Tour of Silver" to French Laundry to . . . but, when we're in Berkeley, we enjoy Chez Panisse CAFE about once a week because we so enjoy Chez Panisse CAFE's ever-changing menu of spectacularly good food.
