Rate and Write a Review In the Bay Area -- and possibly beyond -- Liguria focaccia is as much a cult item as a Screaming Eagle cabernet or Recchiuti chocolate. The bread in question is the perfect texture: not squishy like a hamburger bun, not flaky like a pastry, not dry like a baguette, but dense, firm and definitely made with olive oil. It's found on several restaurant menus as a delicious sandwich foundation, but the authentic Liguria experience is a trip to the bakery itself, a rickety old storefront with a brick oven that hasn't changed since the place opened in 1911. A wander through North Beach with warm focaccia in hand on a cold morning is a must-do San Francisco experience for tourists and locals alike. Get there early for the freshest bread and best selection (the owner closes up shop whenever he sells out).
