In the Bay Area -- and possibly beyond -- Liguria focaccia is as much a cult item as a Screaming Eagle cabernet or Recchiuti chocolate. The bread in question is the perfect texture: not squishy like a hamburger bun, not flaky like a pastry, not dry like a baguette, but dense, firm and definitely made with olive oil. It's found on several restaurant menus as a delicious sandwich foundation, but the authentic Liguria experience is a trip to the bakery itself, a rickety old storefront with a brick oven that hasn't changed since the place opened in 1911. A wander through North Beach with warm focaccia in hand on a cold morning is a must-do San Francisco experience for tourists and locals alike. Get there early for the freshest bread and best selection (the owner closes up shop whenever he sells out).

Great! Nothing else compares

I grew up in the North Beach area eating their focaccia bread. It is the best and it is the tops in flavor, variety and taste. Even almost 60 years later, I still think it's the best in the West!

A True SF Tradition
By califdiscgolfer on 12/14/2005
Living in Sonoma county now, but having spent years in the City working, one of my favorite lunch hour excursions from downtown was a walk up Columbus to Liguria Bakery for the BEST focaccia outside of Italy. Now it's coming down to the City for a weekend baseball game, early, for fresh focaccia sliced on the spot. They used to only carry 4 versions, plain, tomato, onion and raisin, but have since added several new flavors. There's even a deli in Santa Rosa that orders the tomato version, for delivery every Wed. 50 miles to the North.

Pizza original

Usually sold out by mid day, the daily baked fogaccia (to go only) offers a unique culinary delight, in a town renown for tasty breads...on the eve of holidays, (Easter, Columbus Day, New Year) long lines of North Beach residents form on the sidewalk... highly recommended for visitors strolling through San Francisco as the salty sea breeze stirs appetites, and, as we all know, a healthy appetite is a sign of good health
