The SceneA cajoling employee beckons at the entrance in standard North Beach fashion. Handsome servers, dressed in slim black shirts and faded blue jeans, jet around the red-and-brown triangular space, barely keeping up with the influx of tourists. It's not the most exacting style of service, but it's fitting for the easygoing surroundings. The FoodBy and large, the Italian menu is a notch above most other nearby spots. Tomato bruschetta arrives with slices of squeaky mozzarella and flecks of oregano, and briny clams and mussels flaunt their stuff in a pool of olive oil-slicked tomato broth. Black olive, orange and mixed green salad is simple and carefully dressed. Gummy cream sauce does little for green-on-green spinach tortelloni, and caveman era-sized lamb shank looms over a pile of vegetables drenched in butter. By-the-book lasagna saves the day with its mild layers of pasta and bechamel.

Jinnxed??? Whatevaaaaaa
By b76sfnsweet on 06/05/2005
Okay y'all, I've been living in North Beach for 29 years, saw this corner go from the famous US Rest to some funky scary chinese place to Panta Rei, and OHHHH MMYYYY GOD! If that corner once was jinxed, it's not anymore. I was there about a week ago and can't help but to crave the food. Now who would have thought black squid ink polenta with shrimp would be good? ummm!!! I do! Okay, it made my tougue and teeth black but the flavors were so intense I couldn't stop eating it. When our main courses came out I was in heaven, HOMEMADE fettutini with osso bucco! This serious almost gave me an orgasm! The atmostphere is great too! The waitresses and waiters look like the popped out of the italian vogue magazine, FINE!!! Panta Rei is not only a heavenly experience to the eyes but my taste buds will never be the same. For something lighter.... The sandwiches are amazing! I hope Panta Rei stays in North Beach and have continued sucess with the city of San Francisco.

Panta Rei Never Fails
By caroljacquelyn on 12/14/2004
Panta Rei's hospitality is the first reason to stop by and check out the homey Italian cafe. The hosts & hostesses at the door make you feel welcome and like one of their own. Next is the food: REMARKABLE! The consistency of their bruschetta with fresh mozzarella is the reason to always get an appetizer. The oven grilled chicken is tender and full of flavor and their basil tagliolini is cooked al dente and is utter perfection. Top off your meal with the home-made banana crepes covered in nutella. Stop by Panta Rei for the ultimate North Beach experience, my boyfriend and I always make it a point to visit whenever we're in the City. You just can't get Italian like this in LA.

My Must Do in the City
By suprmnzgrl on 05/11/2004
If there is one thing I must do whenever I'm in The City, it's stop at Panta Rei. I first discovered it in November 2003. I was celebrating my 27th birthday and it will forever be memorable because of it. The food was delicious & the service was excellent. I've since been back three times and have yet to be disappointed. Consistency is key for a restaurant. Try Panta Rei, you'll love it. I did!
