At its former location on Geary, Straits Cafe was a longtime city favorite. Very good, fairly reasonable Singaporean food (not found in very many places in San Francisco) in a pleasant atmosphere and, oh, those Singapore slings! When the doors shut on Geary, distraught regulars were soon comforted by the news that Straits would be reopening in the fancy Westfield mall downtown. Though the owners and designers have managed to create a beautiful dining room successfully sectioned off from the rest of the mall, Straits has unfortunately lost some of the magic that made it so well loved. It's not the service or the location, it's really just that the food is not as good. The universal sin seems to be overcooking - a problem that makes seafood and tofu tough, and beef dry. Add to that the fact that the prices have seriously gone up while the quality has gone down and you can see why Straits fans are crying in their beers and planning trips to the still great Straits Cafe in Palo Alto. The San Francisco restaurant is still a lovely place to grab a drink and an appetizer but until the kitchen improves, wed give it a miss for dinner.
