Originally opened in 1979 in a small space in the University District, Dimitriou's now occupies a larger space on Sixth Avenue in Belltown. It has held a reputation over the years as the place to see the best live vocal and instrumental jazz. The large, well-lit stage is the center of attention in this cavernous room, and there are plenty of candlelit tables for fostering the romance of the evening. The club attracts all kinds of people and age ranges, from downtown hipsters to suburban families. Reservations are highly recommended for cocktails and dinner. They can be conveniently made through the club's Web site, which also lists upcoming shows.

Excellent Evening of Jazz

While visiting Seattle recently, made a trip over to this landmark jazz club. Although not easy to find, true to its name the entrance is in the back of the building on a alley way. Big/dark/downstairs room with lots of candle-lit tables. Sat at the bar which was fine but a tab uncomfortable (they actually have coat hooks under the bar). Saw the Jeff Lorber quartet that nite. Remember back in the day, he was a big fusion act with lots of electric sound. However the group played a very good set of acoutical jazz featuring sax/bass.drums/piano. Their sound system was excellent (not too loud). Heard from some patrons the food was good. Surprised how family-friendly the place was (number of children/teen-agers in the audience). Overall good job by the staff as well as the musicians. Frank Riggitano

An excellent venue for a wonderful variety of music. I have been going to Jazz Alley since the early 90's and have always been impressed with the performers, acoustics, and energy! However, EVERY time I've been there (and I've always had dinner) the food has been luke-warm, the servers mention lack of adequate dishware, and the food has been inconcsistent (i.e. steaks g rissly, salmon undersooked, meatballs burned, etc). Given that the cost for food is on the higher-price end, one can only hope that at some point the management might actually do something about the chef/food preparation and dinnerware!! Should that ever improve, this would defnitely be a 5-star!

Heard John Pizzarelli in New York. If he promised not to sing, I would give him 5 stars
