The SceneThe Alexis is much more than outward appearances suggest. Occupying most of its block on First Avenue, its only street-front manifestations are two compact lobbies on First Avenue and Madison Street. Step inside and you enter a friendly, low-key world reminiscent of small-to-medium European hotels, with cheery colors and stucco walls. The Sultan of Brunei wanted to book the entire hotel for APEC in 1993; other visitors had reserved rooms, so the sultan offered to buy the whole property. Eventually, the other guests were housed elsewhere. The hotel's ownership didn't change, but the sultan did redecorate all the rooms.The DetailsRooms are large, discreetly furnished and very quiet. The service is exceptionally accommodating. The Chihuly vases along the walkway to the elevators are the genuine items, from the days before he became as well known as his artwork.
