The Scoop: Since its 1920s debut, Barneys New York has been a department store for shoppers who take fashion very seriously. Though some of its outposts are nine-floor behemoths, these department stores feel more like intimate boutiques. Unlike its more traditional counterparts Neiman Marcus and Saks, Barneys New York prides itself on discovering emerging designers. This is part of its heritage; in the '60s it was the first New York men's store to feature European designers. Major names, like Helmut Lang, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana, are all represented. For those who want to get in on the fun without breaking the bank, more casual, affordable lines like Three Dots, Theory and Marc by Marc Jacobs can also be found. The Scene: Young spenders finger the cashmere scarves and leather clutches, dropping their plastic freely when something catches their eye. The sales staff is equally young, beautiful and impeccably dressed, sometimes so much so that you forget they're actually supposed to be serving you. Tips: Whichever coast you're on, don't miss the legendary annual Barneys Warehouse Sale. It's held in both New York and Beverly Hills, and is always a dream come true for fashion-forward bargain hunters. -- Jenny Bailly
