Though it lacks official recognition from the city's government, the Blue Moon stands as a historical and cultural landmark like no other in the city. Dressed in tagged wooden booths, a stained cement floor and Tuesday's (peanut night) empty shells, the fact that this dive still exists amid the development of the surrounding areas is in itself a phenomena. After opening in 1934, the Moon gained notoriety in the '50s when the beats took over and poets like Alan Ginsberg, Stanley Kunitz and Richard Hugo made it one of their regular haunts, along with rumors of the king Jack Kerouac himself. From that point on, the tavern has continued to embrace its counter- culture patrons, which today comprises largely of young and old hippies, dead heads and assorted leftist thinkers. Along with conversation, Blue Moon entertainment consists of Monday's opera night, Wednesday's open mike and Sundays Grateful Dead bootleg extravaganza. Of recent addition are the portraits of the 2000 Presidential Election candidates, painted on the men's bathroom wall during the Florida ballot recount. A scaled-down version of Seattle Art Museum's Hammering man pounds beer outside on the sidewalk; the window sign says "Sorry, We're Open" -- the walls inside tell much, much more.

Great bar for great conversation
By SaraSaint on 05/30/2008
The bar has changed since these other reviews. The druggies have all be kicked out and the bar now has hard liquor besides a good selection of standard and local beers/wine. There's always someone to talk to when you belly up to the bar...whether you want to talk about sports, politics, chess, chickens or music. Always great music playing by the bartenders and live music a lot of nights and never a cover charge. Lots of bands play and try out their chops at the Blue Moon. Don't knock it until you try it. The folks there are REAL...no ferns.

Have a coke and a smile
By glassturbatr on 06/15/2006
The moon is gloriously filthy, I suggest using the restroom before going and making sure that you leave before the need arises agian. If the alcohol isn't quite cutting it; it's a great place to score some coke or some bud. Theyve got an open mic night that draws in folks that even the most LSD soaked hippy could barely tolerate on a good day. Definitely a must see on your "trip" to the hometown of Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Lane Staley. Of course there's drugs LOL The city's most famous landmark is a freakin needleLOLOLOLOLOLOL

THE OLD DAYS
By dankatbravo7 on 05/15/2005
BACK IN THE LATE 60S WHEN KRAB FM GOT OFF THE GROUND AND ON THE AIR I'M SURE the Blue Moon HAD THEIR TUNER SET ON KRAB OR KZAM. LIKE KRAB KZAM WAS AHEAD OF THEIR TIME. THE BLUE MOON IS ONE OF THOSE FEW PLACES LEFT THAT STILL EMBRACES THE 60S-70S... DAN DA MAN
