Rate and Write a Review Did you miss the '60s? Were you there but don't remember them? Whatever your reason for searching out a hippie-style adventure, make sure to include a stop at the Green Tortoise Hostel downtown. The Green Tortoise has been running its trips in the big green bus between San Francisco and Seattle since 1974. They now go to many other places (Costa Rica, anyone?) and continue to keep their costs low by shoving a lot of sweaty people in one bus -- it's a bargain (albeit smelly) way to travel and explore! The Seattle Hostel (they operate one in San Francisco, too) is within walking distance of nearly anything you need and any entertainment you might be looking for. They offer dormitory- style rooms as well as private rooms, free breakfasts and special "Backpacker Dinners" all at extremely reasonable rates ($15-17 a night for the shared rooms). It's a mind-opening experience that's friendly on your wallet. -- Patricia Whisler
