Rate and Write a Review Though most go out for buttery, crispy and fried for breakfast, once in a while even the most hedonistic among us feels the need to do a little bit of good for his or her body. That's where Sunlight Cafe comes in. Well into its third decade, Seattle's oldest vegetarian enclave offers a wide array of very filling options that include vegan, sugarless and wheat-free items. Popular breakfast choices include whole-grain pancakes, huevos rancheros, veggie scrambles, tahini French bread and an eggless sesame crunch waffle served with fruit and Vermont maple syrup. Wash it all down with juice, Yogi tea or the ubiquitous latte. Lunches and dinners are equally popular and equally nutritious. Regulars feast on stir-fries, steamed veggies and brown rice, salad with lemon tahini dressing, hummus and whole wheat pita, nut and veggie burgers, sandwiches piled on house-made bread and, of course, tofu. This is traditional veggie fare, not fancy, nouveau-vegetarian food, but there is a beer and wine list. Service is generally friendly and sincere, if occasionally distracted. The ambience is just what you'd expect; earthy and casual, with a '60s, hippie Berkeley feel. Rotating displays of local artwork adorn the walls. Weekend brunches can get crowded, so expect a wait.
