In a prime location on Ballard Avenue, the engaging Misael Dominguez and members of his extended family run a smooth operation for owners Graham Graham and Jon Alberts (of Thaiku, across the street). This simply dressed space, the former home of Pizza Mark and Taco del Mar, feels a bit like an art gallery, the walls covered with a crazy quilt of beautiful black and white photos of Oaxaca, punctuated by large, backlit color transparencies. Cream-washed wood banquettes, tables and pale woven chairs are distributed over a terra cotta tile floor and a partition separates the dining area from the postage-stamp bar (whose collection focuses on cerveza and a wide assortment of tequila and mescal). The state of Oaxaca is known for its varied and flavorful cuisine: mole is a regional favorite, and Mole Negro Oaxaquena (black chile mole with chicken or pork, rice and house-made tortillas) is the specialty de la casa. All dishes on "la carta" are designed for sharing. Don't miss the chile relleno, picaditas (tortillas topped with pork sauce, black beans, Oaxaqueno cheese and salsa), and entomatadas verdes -- grilled beef, homemade tortillas in tomatillo sauce with cheese, onion and crema Mexicana.

Best food ever!!
By Betty 3161 on 06/13/2008
This is the best Oaxacan food I have ever had. I am from the Los Angeles area, and whenever in Seattle I make sure that I go at least twice to this restaurant during my visit to Seattle. The food is fresh; it is made when you order it. The best margarita I have ever had. They have the friendliest service and they make sure you have everything you need. Everyone should try the mole. Plates are small, but this good because you can order different foods and gives you the opportunity to taste all they have to offer. They are always busy, but the wait is worth it. I recommend this restaurant to everyone that loves Mexican food and wants to taste authentic Oaxacan food.

Homemade Tortillas & Great Flavor
By KRLAVERTY on 06/11/2008
Look no further for a Mexican restaurant in Seattle. La Carta offers an excellent mix of dishes and tastes. The halibut fish tacos are outstanding; the mole-based sauce on many dishes is delightful. We went on Cinco de Mayo and the restaurant was predictably busy. Portions are relatively small but reasonable in price. More importantly, however, you won't feel the need for larger quantities. The chips are warm, the tortillas are made right there and the ambience is very casual. You may need to wait for seating, but the food, salsa bar and all, are worth it and you won't go away hungry or feelling bloated from too much food either.
