Dinner at Maneki's is pleasant and quiet, making it the perfect place to take someone who doesn't know that much about Japanese food. Everyone dines Western-style, and portions of sushi are generous to say the least. The menu is in both Japanese and English, and the friendly waitstaff can answer any questions about your choices -- without making you feel like an idiot (no trendier-than-thou exclamations like, "You mean you don't know what Unagi is?"). You can keep the meal, with appetizer or soup, under $15 a person if you don't order sake -- although sake does complement almost everything on the menu. Combination dinners are a best bet -- allowing you to sample different dishes at bargain prices. -- Jeannine Gailey

Maneki Restaurent is the oldest Japanese restaurant in Seattle. Former Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki worked as a bus boy here before World War II while attending school in America. The food is fabulous - especially sushi sizes! -- and the service is impeccable!
