Traffic-heavy U.S. 1 is far from an idyllic spot for a fantastic seafood restaurant. Captain's Tavern, however, has managed to get away with its location for more 30 years, thanks to its off-the-boat freshness and delightfully dingy decor reminiscent of an old-school seafood shanty. With a massive menu and equally massive -- and impressive -- wine list, a meal at the Captain's Tavern is bound to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Lobster bisque is possibly the best in town, and seafood, which tastes as if it's just been caught and is available for purchase in the neighboring market, is cooked any way imaginable. Macadamia nut-encrusted pompano and Tuesday's two-for-one lobster tails are among a stellar list of standouts. Because Captain's Tavern doesn't take reservations, there's almost always a wait, but have patience, soak up the ambience, and pretend you're on a ship with nowhere else to go. -- Lesley Abravanel

Very, very disappointing!
By cppclem on 06/20/2007
Who writes these positive reviews??? Tried and tried to like this restaurant because we live nearby. Went 5 or 6 times and was always disappointed. Fish portions continually undersized. Mediocre sides and salads. Too pricey for a diner-type lunch meal being served at dinner. BIG THUMBS DOWN!

Excellent food and service

My family and I have lived in Miami for 3 years now. Since we are newcomers we wanted to soak up as much of the local ambiance possible and have eaten at MANY Miami-area restaurants. ...In our search for seafood restaurants, the Captain's Tavern stands head and shoulders above the rest. Each time we have eaten there the food has been utterly delicious and the service above reproach. Thank you for the ejoyable times in your establishment Chef Paul!!!

Great seafood! No "scene"!
By dreamlanddesigns on 08/17/2006
Great restaurant to enjoy seafood. Lobster Bisque as good as or better than Baleen's bisque on the island at a fraction of the price. Macadamia fish is also excellent. Great casual atmosphere with no typical Miami seen and be seen Scene! Nice to be able a relax and enjoy a good meal with friends and family. And they are very kid friendly. Our children love the decor they think they are eating at the Pirates of the Caribean ride at Disney. Highly reccomded!
