Traffic-heavy U.S. 1 is far from an idyllic spot for a fantastic seafood restaurant. Captain's Tavern, however, has managed to get away with its location for more 30 years, thanks to its off-the-boat freshness and delightfully dingy decor reminiscent of an old-school seafood shanty. With a massive menu and equally massive -- and impressive -- wine list, a meal at the Captain's Tavern is bound to satisfy even the pickiest eater. Lobster bisque is possibly the best in town, and seafood, which tastes as if it's just been caught and is available for purchase in the neighboring market, is cooked any way imaginable. Macadamia nut-encrusted pompano and Tuesday's two-for-one lobster tails are among a stellar list of standouts. Because Captain's Tavern doesn't take reservations, there's almost always a wait, but have patience, soak up the ambience, and pretend you're on a ship with nowhere else to go. -- Lesley Abravanel

average food, awful service

They used to take more pride in the food that they serve. The service and management are not customer friendly. Beware of altering any menu items as they will frown upon it.

Where's the service??
By kl4irish on 01/12/2006
We've have dined at this restaurant for both lunch and dinner for years. One of it's staying powers is that there is no competion around for seafood. The average age of the customers is 75 years and they love the "old 70's look" and they are never in a hurry. Thank goodness there's the special board when you walk in or you would never know what's on it. On every occasion our server disappears after dropping off the entrees and shows up with the check. Yeah it's a large wine list, but on 3 occasions had to refuse the fermented bottle. For the most part the fish is fresh, but overpriced with the frills.

No Servers of Color 06/26/05
By bscavella on 06/26/2005
I have never seen a black server, but maybe there is a reason, and I have dined at the Tavern since the late 70's. Every meal has been delicious!! I have recommended the Taven to many friends and they feel the same. If you like bread pudding and never tried it there, do so. It is to die for.
