When Dr. Tim Hogle opened Tantra, it was all about the sexy. For the practicing dentist/restaurateur's new eatery, afterglo, it's all about beauty -- on the plate and on your face. It seems Hogle (who, incidentally, looks very young for his age) recently became interested in identifying foods that contained beautifying elements. Then he put chef Michael Schwartz in charge of creating dishes that retained those elements while also entertaining customers' taste buds. Using ingredients so obscure that guests are given a glossary to find out what the heck they are ordering (ever heard of gotu kola, goji berries and chia seed?), he and pastry chef Alejandro Briceno pulled off the coup with unique, yet tasty, offerings including both flora and fauna. Though the ordering can be challenging with all the new taste options, and the prices tend to run a bit high, the environment is intimate and relaxing. Oh, and the light isn't harsh, either. After all, Hogle wants all his guests to look their very best.

Just okay

The food was okay. Nothing to rave about. It was healthy, although it kind of just seemed like a glorified wild oats/wholefoods meal. A bit pretentious on the prices (i.e. glass of wine $27) even for SOBE. Not even the established restaurants charge that much. Staff was friendly, although not too fluent in English. Overall, the food was good, but I probably won't go back nor tell my friends to go check it out.
