Not for the faint of diet, Betty's Restaurant & BBQ is a down home soul food and barbecue restaurant in which the notion of being smothered is a positive one and ultimately a way of life. Let's start with the massive breakfast menu in which all dishes come with a choice of grits or hash browns and toast or hot, home cooked biscuits -- go for the biscuits, hands down. Corned beef hash, liver with onions, smothered chops, smothered chicken wings and fried mullet are all available for breakfast. But so are eggs and delicious pancakes and French toast. For the health conscious, there's a tossed salad, but, really, why bother? As if the meal itself wasn't enough, don't forget about the side dishes, which include macaroni and cheese and fried chicken gizzards. Dinner specialties include fried catfish, smothered ribs, exquisite barbecue chicken and ribs, and an excellent smothered cube steak. Chef's nightly specials such as Sunday's baked ham and yams and Friday and Saturday's chitterlings are culinary experiences straight out of the south.--Lesley Abravanel
