Order a couple of Rock ponies at the Skeller and you'll be indulging in a State College tradition. One of Pennsylvanias first licensed bars and a longtime favorite of Penn State students, the Rathskeller opened in 1933 just three days after the repeal of Prohibition. Dark, worn and full of history, this basement drinking establishment boasts a fully stocked bar with 21 taps. You can get your local Rolling Rock by the "case study," pony (7-ounce bottle), horse, glass or pitcher. Those intrigued by dubious distinctions should note that the bar currently holds the worlds record for most cases of beer sold in a 24-hour period. Photographs and other memorabilia tell the story of the Skeller, as does Harry, the bars living history professor and a Rathskeller fixture for over 50 years. Pack in with all the college kids and enjoy live entertainment from area bands most Wednesday through Saturday nights. The floor gets a bit sticky, so leave your new Bruno Maglis at home.
