You have to look pretty hard to find a dance club more fun than Club Viva. Located in the fashionable Central West End, this club specializes in Latin music, but reggae and hip-hop also get plenty of play. It's an older, more cosmopolitan crowd without any of the ego- driven pretension that other scenester-filled dance clubs exude. There's generally a pretty good crowd on the dance floor, and these people know how to dance -- salsa, merengue, mambo -- you name it. If your skills aren't quite up to speed, then come early for the free dance lessons, or just sit back by the bar and have fun watching the couples move. Ask for a specialty drink like the pisco sour or caipirinha; the drinks'll add a little sass to your salsa. Since this Latin sensation is in the basement, once the bodies hit the floor it's going to get hot, so bottled water is drink of choice for many. It's one of the best nights out in the city, and women can enter free. -- Adam Bonislawski

Love Salsa, but ugh the smoke
By Roxie5953 on 01/11/2009
I was a frequent visitor to Club Viva for a while but the heavy smoking finally got to me....it's so intense there with virtually no ventilation and lots of foreigners which is great, but they tend to smoke a LOT MORE than we Americans. Stay there for 30 minutes and your clothes will be laden with nicotene smells. Now my pals and I simply don't go there because of the smoke thing. Otherwise if you are a smoker or not and don't care about your lungs or heart have a blast.

Viva is one of the best places in St. Louis to Latin dance in my opinion. I have been going there for about a year. Not only do they offer free lessons, the dance floor is always filled. The best part is the gentlemen always asking to dance. Viva occasionally even offers live music. I highly recommend Viva to anyone that loves to dance salsa, merengue, cha cha, etc.
