Located near Shaw Park in Clayton, Cardwell's of Clayton is a popular destination with the happy hour set, especially after the Parties in the Park. The noisy bar full of mostly thirty-somethings opens to the street. Established in 1987, Cardwell's of Clayton is also the site of many business lunch meetings, private parties and romantic dinners for two later in the evening. The tile-floored front room and slightly plusher inside dining room that features an extensive collection of artwork helps Cardwell's achieve a sophisticated atmosphere. But people wouldn't keep flocking here if the food wasn't interesting. The menu is seasonal and might feature contemporary American dishes like roasted rack of lamb crusted with mustard and herb crumbs and served with merlot jus and potato-gruyere gratin, or a grilled veal chop served with truffled wild mushrooms, caramelized onion and parmesan-reggiano risotto and roasted vegetables. While there is a Cardwell's at Plaza Frontenac, the two split a couple of years ago. -- HW

Can we update?
By tphob on 07/03/2004
Hard to believe this place is still in business. It must be from bar and patio traffic. After an 8 year absence we returned for dinner. Previous bad experience prompted the 8 year sabbatical. We found: Very convenient free parking. Nice, convenient building. Atmosphere and decor 3/5, clean - but stale and dated. Menu variety 3/5, very limited choices. Service was OK, although host and server seemed bored with the place. Food quality was OK (wife said hers was good). Will go back when new restaurant opens here (or 8 years) - whichever is first.
