At a neighborhood steakhouse, you can expect gracious service that isn't too fast or too slow, servers that may recognize you if you've been there a couple of times and a house dressing like Thousand Island. That's the feel at the Charcoal House; this is not a chain. That means your appetizer won't be named after a cute little animal that resides Down Under. Diners come to this Webster Groves restaurant for comfort food from the Cold War era, like filet mignon, porterhouse steaks, baked potatoes and hash brown casserole. The salads come in two varieties: iceberg or spinach. It keeps it simple for finicky eaters. Specialty touches include crumbly blue cheese on top of the Thousand Island dressing. It's comfort food, and according to the Atkins diet, it's good for you! Just don't tell your dietician if you indulge in the chocolate suicide for dessert. -- HW

I didn't like it that much

We were a party of four. As soon as we went in we were faced with a sort of charming (in a weird way) host. I'm guessing he was the owner. He bent over, with one hand over his heart, and smiled and asked if we'd like smoking or not. Later on, as we pass by he is mumbling something in foreign language clinching at one of the employees, and then almost immediately smiled back at us. Whoa, I thought… anyway the most important part is the food. The stakes were pretty good, the fish overcooked, the baked potatoes were pretty big, but the meat rations were kind of on the small side. The bartender would make fun of everyone in the room and showed us a really good time. What I didn’t like most though were constantly people rubbing behind my chair and asking us relentlessly if we wanted more water or something like that (wanted us to leave quickly I guess) I am sorry but if I am going someplace to spend $200 for 4, I expect to not choke on my $29.99 steak, which was pretty good by the way. For the price I would try something else, definitely.

20+ years, always the best steak. The steaks have flavor, they don't need to cover them in "Legendary" horseradish.
