The Hill, as it's known in St. Louis, is a historically blue-collar Italian neighborhood in the city that boasts an impressive concentration of restaurants that specialize in delicacies from Mama's kitchen. Certainly one of the more popular destinations here is Charlie Gitto's on the Hill; it's a fine stop for those craving homemade pasta and sauce or anyone who has worked up an appetite walking the expansive grounds of the nearby Missouri Botanical Garden. Among the offerings here is toasted ravioli, a local specialty that, according to St. Louis legend, is a Gitto's invention. The romantic front room is dimly lit and features cozy booths and antique accents from the '30s and '40s. Pastas include homemade cannelloni, linguine with fresh clams and farfalle with smoked chicken in a roasted garlic cream sauce. Entrees include tenderloin Siciliano, lambchops with mango demi, and veal Nunzio with crab meat. Mangia! -- HW

OUTSTANDING

Best Italian food in St. Louis, by far. Great service, beautiful dining facilities, and toasted ravioli out of this world. If you're looking for a better Italian restaurant, you'll have to go to Italy. Even then, I/m not sure. Definitely superior, in every way.
