Although the barbecue gurus in Kansas City are world-renowned for their grilling ability, there are also plenty of capable chefs on the eastern side of the Show-Me State. Charlotte's Rib has been a leader in the St. Louis barbecue community since emerging in Kirkwood in 1977, and though it's now housed in a strip mall in West County, both the vibe and grub are still authentically down-home. The decor is decidedly Old West to match the menu. It has dubbed the eats ''authentic Western BBQ,'' with pork shoulder, brisket, sugar-cured ham, pork ribs and smoked beef ribs as the centerpiece of the menu. But before you get the main course, for an appetizer you might try some of the self-proclaimed ''best darn chili,'' Southern-style burgoo stew or BBQ chicken wings. Young ones have plenty of fixings to choose from too, including the ''wahoo cheeseburger,'' chicken bites and junior ranch hand (two ribs). Though it seems unlikely, if you somehow still have any space left in your stomach, chocolate raspberry cheesecake acts as the house specialty dessert.
