Rate and Write a Review A carb-lovers' paradise, Companion has been baking breads and goodies for St. Louis area restaurants, hotels and grocery stores since 1993. The owners started baking in South City with one imported French stone oven, and by the end of their first year, they were preparing 900 pounds of dough daily. Since then, they've grown to three ovens and more than 10,000 pounds of dough per day. Fans of the handcrafted breads, pastries and breakfast treats were elated when Companion finally opened a retail shop/restaurant in Clayton in spring 2001. Open for breakfast and lunch, the Companion Bakehouse and Cafe features nearly every type of carbohydrate you crave. The menu includes 11 hearth breads such as rustic olive and raisin brioche, 12 types of sandwich buns like the John Dough, 10 flat breads like sundried tomato-dressed or herb crostini, a variety of croissants, six different Danishes, muffins and breakfast breads like mocha swirl and banana pecan, cookies and last -- but not least -- Sophie's NY bagels. -- Hillary Wicai
