Joe and Vince Cunetto were two brothers operating a pharmacy in St. Louis' famous Hill neighborhood when, in 1972, they decided to trade in the pill dispenser for the parsley grater and open up a restaurant. Since then, Cunetto's has been one of the stars in The Hill's constellation of highly popular Italian restaurants. The portions are overwhelming, and since they don't take reservations for dinner, you may want to stop in for lunch between 11AM and 2PM on weekdays to avoid one of St. Louis' longest waits. As the name suggests, pasta is the mainstay here, though Cunetto's does offer the obligatory Italian alternative entrees, including seafood and veal. There's even a special menu section for no-cholesterol, low-salt pastas, though entering The Hill with such restrictions in mind is like a recovering alcoholic walking through a brewery. Pasta highlights include the toasted ravioli and the linguini alla Pavarotti, described in the menu as ''linguini served with famous tenor's favorite sauce of anchovies, tomato, parsley and red pepper.'' And you don't have to be a globally renowned opera singer to afford it -- in keeping with Cunetto's generally moderate prices, entrees like this are typically less than $10. -- HW

This is one of the best Italian restaurants..if you are looking for just a red sauce pasta house, then this is not for you.. The menu is well rounded, try something different..I've tried to pick something different everytime, and have not been disappointed..

Just OK

Nothing remarkable about this restaurant. I had the eggplant parmesan for an appetizer and the tortellini with meat sauce for an entree. Neither were great. The eggplant was served with a lot of cheese and was a little too greasy, almost like eating something deep fried. The tortellini was not bad, but again not remarkable. The price is very low, so I would say this is a good place to grab lunch or dinner. Very filling, huge portions, not bad Italian-American food. It doesn't compare to a place you would wander into in Italy. It's not light, mediterranian cuisine, and not really fine dining, but a good place to grab some lunch.

I have eaten more meals in this restaurant than any other in St Louis over the last 20 years (lots of business lunches). But I would not rate it as the best Italian food in town. I've been to Italy, NYC, Chicago etc., and this is okay - but not noteworthy. The price is right and service usually exceeds the food in satisfation. Try it.
