Cost Per Person: $0-10* Blue Plate Special: Authentic Mexican fare offered up by a chain that doesn't feel like one. The Dish: Three brothers began this chain of restaurants in, of all places, Alabama. With that said, you might be surprised to know that the food is the real thing for really small amounts of money. El Maguey menus have everything you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant: tacos, burritos, enchiladas, spicy rice and beans, and a never-ending supply of chips and salsa brought to the table without having to request refills. Be careful of the fishbowl-sized margaritas. Drinking one is really more of a group activity than a solo adventure. The Atmosphere: You'd swear that each of the El Maguey locations is owned and operated by a Mexican family that's recently settled in the area. In other words, the food is authentic and the atmosphere isn't a cookie-cutter copy of the last El Maguey you visited. There are no theme decorations -- just tables, chairs and good food. The feel you get is that you've discovered a tasty hole-in-the wall. -- Hillary Wicai *Cost per person include entree, drink & dessert

Me and my gal sit down and these guys know exactly what we want. Call us regulars for a reason: great food, pricing, and service. You always know you'll get quality at this El Maguey location.

There are many El Maguey restaurants in the area. We live in St.Charles and it is our favorite one. The people are friendly and the food is prepared fast and delicious!! It is a reasonably priced dinner that everyone will enjoy!!

Ugh, fake cheese.
By rosematt on 01/03/2007
Perhaps it was just the one day, but I wasn't impressed with El Maguey. The cheese was "cheese food" as opposed to shredded cheese, and the meat was greasy and overspiced with chile powder. I am orginally from Denver and am probably spoiled, but this is more like Del Taco than an "authentic" Mexican restaurant.
