As they leave St. Louis County many are surprised to find wooded, rolling hills in the generally flat Midwest. Even more are downright astounded to discover a gourmet three-star (Mobil rating), four-diamond (AAA rating) French restaurant nestled among those rolling hills. At Malmaison, the menu changes with the seasons. In the winter, enjoy grilled Cornish hen in a mustard demi-glace sauce; in the summer, dine outside on roasted trout in a light lemon butter sauce. The restaurant was originally built in 1843 as a barn. In 1926 it became the "The Old Barn Inn." Now a restaurant, the owners were inspired by the name of Napoleon and Josephine's French country estate, "Mal Maison." Thus the restaurant's motto: "Classic French Cuisine. Classic Estate Setting." -- HW

Don't waste the drive

Surely not as it was. We went when they were catering a wedding . The service was almost absent, with a head waitress character who couldn't open or pour a bottle of champagne herself, nor bring us a bottle of wine ordered with appetizers before dessert arrived. Coffee was impossible to get for our table, although it flowed freely for others. Entrees were cold, as were the calamari. The waitress was quick to deny knowledge of the wine list or much of anything else. The manager could not be located, and some poor guy left in his place did at least help with the bill, but we still had a beer ordered by someone else appear on it. What a shame. Nice ambience, though.

DO NOT GO!!!
By Schmit1234 on 05/25/2008
My wife and I went there for a supposedly nice dinner and it turned into a disaster, terrible service and terrible food. I ordered a tomato salad with onions, which I saw another customer get, the salad I saw had nice beefsteak tomato slices with red onion and this salad was huge. I received a small salad plate with cherry tomatoes cut in half with very little red onion, disappointing to say the least. My wife ordered the French Onion soup, the bowl was 3/4 filled and did not have the nice broiled cheese on top. The soup looked like it was spilled and still served. I had to ask fro bread at least 5 times and finally received it when I was 1/2 way through my entree. We both ordered the chicken stuffed with mushrooms and the chicken was extremely overcooked and very dry, there was not enough sauce to dehydrate this chicken breast. I saw one table complain that the pasta did not contain the correct ingredients and another table sent their steak back. This is the 2nd time over 3 years we have gone and I will never go again. Next time I will drive a little further and go to 3 Brothers restaurant in Labadie where the service is impeccable, the food is outstanding, and atmosphere is just as good. Save the $100 bill and go somewhere else!! And if you have ever been to Europe you realize right away that this place will remind you nothing of it.

Not as it was

In the past Malmaison was one of my favorite places to go. It was gracious and the food exceptional. No longer is that true. The restaurant was so concerned about the wedding they were dealing with in their banquet area that they totally disregarded their restaurant clientele. The food was nothing to get excited about and the service so slow. We enjoyed Malmaison as one of our favorite places to be when it was previously owned. Now, I would not recommend it to any one.

HORRIBLE!
By kris10vu on 05/18/2007
My party was very disappointed by our meal at Malmaison. Our appetizers were sub-par (they even ran out of what we ordered). The steak was drastically overcooked and way overpriced. They need to cook a few more steaks before charging $38 a pop. I would never recommend a 45 minute drive for a below average dinner. You won us years back, Malmaison, but you have lost your quality as well as a customer.
