As a true gauge of authentic Cajun cuisine, you'll find that the regulars of The Gumbo Shop are mostly of Louisiana heritage. This small mom and pop operation was started by two retired federal agents, and they begin each day peeling shrimp, boiling beans and rice, and accepting deliveries while the children of owners and employees play in the dining room. The customers make a welcome addition to the family environment, and join in the conversations of fishing stories from the bayou. Jambalaya, red beans and rice, and catfish are all the "real thing" here, and daily specials are quite a bargain. Sandwiches are piled high with seafood and served on French bread that arrives daily from a local bakery. Check in occasionally for the frog leg special. The restaurant will cater Mardi Gras celebrations or any other event, and Cajun-fried turkeys can be specially ordered for the holidays. -- Bob Johndrow
