For urbanites longing for a classic single-screen movie theater within the city limits, as well as those on the outskirts who've tired of the multiplexes that have inundated the metropolitan area, the Moolah Theatre & Lounge in Midtown provides an exceptionally comfortable option in a historically stylish setting. Housed in a building that includes a bowling alley and some 40 loft apartments, the cinema inside is almost guaranteed to overpower guests at first glance. For starters, there's room for 400 patrons, but with a multitude of leather couches, love seats and tables on the lower level (unique setups that any date will appreciate), rows of traditional stadium seating in the middle and balcony viewing in the back, you'll see that this is no ordinary motion picture-watching arrangement. Add barrel-vaulted ceilings, chandeliers and carpet, and you're helplessly rendered in awe of the surroundings -- and this is all before the 45-by-20-foot screen comes to life. Even if you're not in the mood for a movie, the full-service bar is a worthy destination for a night out. Or, bring your drinks inside the theater, settle into a leather couch and watch a movie. The bar opens one hour before the first show and closes an hour after. However, it stays open until 1AM on Fridays and Saturdays for some heavy post-movie mingling. And don't forget the bowling alley for the lane lovers.

Movie good--services bad!
By minirider on 07/02/2005
Yes, the screen and seating are great-- but the management isn't! My husband and I visited the Moolah for the third time on July 1 to see the first screening of "War of the Worlds". We had the same problems encountered previously--lack of bar service (they advertise it is open an hour before the movie--it wasn't even open when the movie started!) and the staff turning on the lights and cleaning before the credits were finished. My husband resorted to going down to the bowling alley to get a drink and then asked to speak to the manager. He got the building owner who told him to "Take your business else where"--so we will!

That's Entertainment

We ordered a bottle of wine from the bar, took our seats on a huge leather couch, and watched a great movie. That's huge! Next time we go, we're taking a group and we're going to bowl after the movie. There is a cool bowling alley in the building. The Moolah is a winner.
