In the U. City Loop, all restaurants draw casual crowds. Seki is no exception. Its dining room, decorated with Japanese dolls and a television that frequently shows Japanese programs, attracts students and other folks who have learned to be patient with the slow pace of the kitchen and the occasional grouchiness of the servers. They are rewarded with a fine bento box with small, delicate tastes of small, delicate items. The sushi selection is limited to the more familiar fish, but the list includes excellent yellowtail, one of the fishy fishes. (St. Louisans often eschew fish that doesn't taste like chicken.) The Miso soup pleases. A chunk of salmon marinated in sake is wonderful, the skin crisp and the meat tender without being overcooked. Sometimes there's an egg custard with black mushrooms, smooth and less subtle than a lot of Japanese dishes. Some of the unusual tastes may be too much (or little) for Western palates. Seki offers cow intestine with tofu and onions, or summer potatoes, both having interesting textures but very little in the way of strong flavor. Tempura, however, will make up for that, offering crunch and fine flavor to any piece you're lucky enough to pick up.

Excellent food and service.

I'm reading the previous reviews and find it hard to believe it's the same place. I apprenticed to a Japanese chef and worked in restaurants for years. Seki's is not top tier, but it's been consistantly very good to excellent. The servers have been pleasant and efficient. Seki himself is reserved, but not rude. He is very knowledgeable. The rice -- the basis of sushi -- has been spot on. Where Seki's is not top tier is in the fish selection -- never bad and usually very good to excellent, but occasionally mediocre. Easily the best in the area.
