A tavern tradition in Affton for decades, the Ten Mile House is simply one of the best places to hang out for residents of South St. Louis County. It makes the self-proclaimend ''cheeseburger that's so good it'll make you forget about your mama's'' -- that is, if you're mama ever served burgers from a nice dive such as this. Buckets of cold brew are plentiful, and the menu is stacked with salads, apps and sandwiches. There are plenty of games on hand, including pool tables and bubble hockey, and a fireplace and couch in the center that adds to the unusually cozy ambiance. In the back there's a small stage that's shaped almost like a manger -- apparently an ode to rock and roll and the owner's commitment to bringing local music talent to an area where the entertainment scene is severely lacking. Though the crowd is largely local, it's worth the short jaunt from I-55 for everyone to take in the ample comforts of the House. -- Cary Anthes

One Helluva Place
By wildwildwes54 on 07/06/2008
The minute you walk in the door, this place just "feels right" -- nothing trendy or put on, but never boring. The folks behind the bar, and the folks at the bar, don't seem to know a stranger. It's quite a mix of people, too. Some nights, you're just as likely to see a group of 4 or 5 young women having drinks as young guys. Some bars, you have to wait until 10:00 before there's a crowd. Not here. There's always folks at The Ten Mile. The food's great, too. Now, a lot of times when people say "the food's great at that bar," what they means to say is "it's really a restaurant with a liquor license," where people come to eat, not drink. Not this place. This is a bar, dammit. Nobody here's going to shove a menu in your face. They just sort of let you watch food go past until you start thinking, "damn, that looks good," then "damn, that smells good," then you break down and order something and damn, it IS good. They don't gig you on the food, just like they don't gig you on the drinks. If you leave with empty pockets, it's only because the place felt so comfortable that instead of staying for an hour or so like you intended at first, you wound up buying a round for some new friends for last call. Pull up a stool, podnah'. You'll be glad you did.
