In 1977, Harry Waugh, a prestigious British wine buyer and author of several books on the art of wine-tasting, invited the proprietor of Bern's Steakhouse to dinner in his London home. After the meal, Mr. and Mrs. Waugh invited their guests to retire to a cozier drawing room for dessert, and the idea for the Harry Waugh Dessert Room at Bern's was born. Draped in red velvet and privacy curtains, the Harry Waugh Room is a slice of English gentility in one of America's finest-rated steakhouses. The concept of dessert here is broad: bubbling champagnes, still dessert wines, and sipping whiskies are as likely to fulfill the course as fresh fruit arrangements and sweet, aged cheese concoctions. You'll have to go elsewhere for your ice-cream brownie sundae. Traditional couples dancing is also encouraged, but don't be surprised if you prefer to nuzzle romantically and feed each other grapes in the secluded booth. Formal attire and reservations are a must. - Rachel Moran

Very Special--Don't Miss
By PghParrot on 05/26/2008
Whenever you go to Bern's,always make room for dessert, so whenever your server asks "Shall I make a reservation for you in the dessert room?" you can say "yes!!" You will not be sorry. Unlike back in the 70's formal attire is not required, but you do have to dress "smart casual" at least. Don't wear your flip flops, tank tops or jeans. Men can wear a collared shirt and nice pants and women can wear nice pants and top or casual dress. As for the desserts, they are expensive, and they are big, and there's a huge selection. But this is a great special occasion restaurant, and eating dessert here is special. You go upstairs to the dessert room where there is a maze of secluded booths and tables. You get your own "room" and controls on the wall to pick the music of your choice. There's also a button to call the server, and it'snice to have the privacy. This is a great place to take someone forany special occasion.

Not to be missed!!
By fishjoint on 05/16/2007
I come from four generations of Tampa natives and have been dining at Bern's since before it had a dessert room. The booths are cozy and romantic, complete with music and a small tv if you like (my husband watched the sugar bowl, while out celebrating our anniversery). We always go up for after dinner drinks and dessert. They have every liqueur, brandy or port you can think of and the desserts are exquisite! The King Midas which is a concoction of warm carrot cake, macadamia nut ice cream and chocolate...heaven!

The desserts are ver good. As to Formal Attire--I have been there several times--not tuxedoes/formal gowns to be seen. Romi Ebeling (-:
