As Godzilla trampled through the streets of Tokyo, crushing everything in its path, so, too, is Samurai Blue demolishing its competition. The ultra-trendy sushi and sake bar in Ybor City's Centro Ybor complex attracts sophisticated and sassy diners seeking something more than a California roll with a side of been-there-done-that. Looking more like a hipster lounge than a sushi joint, the restaurant boasts 40-foot vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls, a 30-foot long sushi bar shaped like a tsunami, cozy banquettes and booths upholstered in samurai blue. Chrome and neon accents spice up the dining room like a dash of wasabi. The menu will jolt you, too, with 'Hyper-Asian Fusion' dishes like the Samurai Steak, Tokyo Beef Short Ribs and Panko Seared Crab Cake, and as wide a variety of sushi -- nigiri, sashimi, makimono and hand rolls -- as any place in the Bay. If that doesn't scare off competitors, perhaps a Spontaneous Combustion Roll washed down with an infused saketini will. -- Kerry Speckman

Great food/bad service
By qut18 on 02/24/2009
If this rating based on food alone, I would have selected 5 stars. However, the one in Westchase has really bad service (verrrrrrrry slow) and rude waitresses. I used to go with a friend twice a week for lunch and you would think large tips = better service. That is not the case. I havent been there in a long time, however, I hope management replaced those girls with better servers. Otherwise, love the place! Great decor, atmosphere, and the best sushi Ive ever had!

Horrible
By AHstar2001 on 01/11/2009
I went there recently for a friends birthday and I would have much rather gone some place closer to home. Out of the 5 rolls I ordered, only ONE was good and that was the Volcano Roll (but I think its kinda hard to make that one bad). Then to top things off, at the end of the night when we left, I paid for my bill and was brought out the receipt to sign. I signed for the amount on the receipt and didn't put a tip on my card because I left cash (she didn't deserve much, and I'm a great tipper if they deserve it). Now checking my bank statement, they charged me much more than I signed for. I will NEVER be returning again. Its not worth it.

Bring Out of Towners here!!!
By DaniBuccaGirl on 06/15/2008
I love this place...I take my out of town friends there and go quite often myself. Its decor is simple and the people that work there in all departments are very polite...If you are in a hurry then dont go there...But when you are with good friends or family what is the diference enjoy time with them and eat great sushi...The saki is awsome!! got two big ones!!
