Every time you ask a Tampa Bay musician about ''The Mug,'' you get a mixed reaction of nostalgia and veneration. All of the city's best local bands get their start at The Brass Mug, a place some regard a dive because of its no-frills, down-to-earth approach to live music entertainment. The Mug is for folks who don't care about fancy furniture or lighting and just want to see a great mix of local and national bands, including up-and-comers they won't see anywhere else. If you're at The Mug and you don't dig the band, there's plenty to do to keep you occupied -- pool, darts, pinball, trivia -- and food from a full kitchen. Attend or play open jam nights on Mondays; hear live Internet simulcasts on its Web site; sing karaoke with Laser Ray on Tuesdays; drink up at Happy Hour every day between 11AM and 7PM; and play free pool from 5PM to 7PM Mon.-Fri.

First off, this is not a place you want to take a date you're trying impress (unless she has several piercings, tattoos and likes pbr). Second, don't wear you're gucci and armani clothes here because if you stay longer than 15 minutes YOU and EVERYTHING ON YOU WILL smell like a marlboro. Third, don't mistake everything i just said as meaning this bar is all bad. The mug has been a staple in Tampa for over 20 years and you would be surprised at some of the groups who have played on its stage while cutting their teeth in underground clubs (does nirvana ring a bell?). It is one of those sleazy clubs that bands and fans love to hate and hate to love. The only thing that has been a problem lately is that bands have not been consistantly booked so some weekends even noone might be playing (check their myspace page to see the schedule if they update it). With all this being said the mug is a bar you NEED to stop by if you are in Tampa and a lover of live music.

The Mug

I enjoy the Mug because its small, but comfortable. You never see a very large crowd in there, but most the people are very friendly. The stage has a good set up aswell. The stage has a barrior but you are still close to the bands. The only thing the Mug is doing to screw itself over now is charging the bands for the use of the sound guy. The sound guy is a bar employee- so the bar should pay for him. It's hard for the out of town bands that cant bring that many ppl to make any money if its going to the sound maitaince.,

A Bnd Everyone Should see
By richies4thsn on 03/21/2005
I can't believe what good sound quality came out of that place. Looks were deceeeeving. I went on the night of march 20th, and i heard this band named RADIO AMP that has so much potentail to make it BIG. They were amazing considering they had only been together five months. A lot of people came out and not one person had a bad time at the show. RADIO AMP rocked so hard, i can't believe they are unsigned and can't wait to see them live again at the mug.
