This beach sits in the Davis Island section of Tampa, a community boasting pleasant residential areas and a small-but-charming shopping/dining district. This is not a beach to visit if you're looking for the pristine or for a great family getaway. Decidedly downscale (its local nickname of "Beer Can Beach" should give you a clue), it is known primarily as the sole Tampa waterfront park in which you are allowed to run your dog. Sociable mutts have a blast running unfettered into Old Hillsborough Bay. --Laura Spinale

I'm going out to buy a Golden Lab the first week of June and it sure sounds like a great place for her (I'm getting a female) to enjoy the day!!

It is a doggie beach. So don't bring the kids, blankets, or sun shelters. Great place for the dogs to run and socialize. That is what is is for.

Clarification Please! From reading all the reviews - I am gathering that this is only a 'beach' area to go in Tampa if you have a dog? I don't - love them - but why is Davis Island Beach listed as one of the "Unusual places to meet someone" on this silly page if you can only go there to watch your pooch? No swimming? No sunning? I have a friend with a great Lab, maybe I better take her with if I go...
