This neighborhood institution is hard to miss, if only for the neon signs above the entrance. The rear of the murky, always busy bar leads more or less straight into the dining room, where all manner of delicious culinary assaults on your arteries take place. The only out-of-the-ordinary appetizers are giblets and chicken livers, and the grilled baby-beef liver with onions, bacon and mushrooms, while entrees like the pork Normandy are usually more of a hit than a miss. The dessert menu, chalked up daily on a large board behind the hostess station, is hard to ignore. If you bypass the menu or a suggestion from your wait person, your neighbor's homemade cheesecake or pie will surely make you cave. At lunchtime, Dolly and Joe's serves lots of busy, hurried workers taking a frenzied, clock-watching lunch hour, so this meal sitting is not very relaxed, despite the Olympian efforts of the staff. Between the cooking, the informal, friendly mood, and the service, you're not likely to regret having added this laid-back eatery to your short list, even if only for lunch. As an added bonus, the restaurant has installed an efficient ventilation system that actually makes the smoking and nonsmoking sections almost equally lung-friendly.

Good and Bad
By muddled2 on 08/16/2007
Dolly and Joe's is one of the last Ma and Pa restaurants in Toledo. The food is it's best attribute. The quality and quantity is satisfying and excellent. The service depends on the waitress. They do seem to have a few waitresses that need some basic lessons in pleasing all of thier customers. Now the atmosphere is in need of some serious improvement. The place needs to be brightened up with some natural lighting and there is much to be said about the smell of stale urinal cakes. My advice for this restaurant is to get an exhaust fan in the bathroom it may alleviate much of the odor throughout the restaurant. Also the owner should visit the Reynolds Garden Cafe. There is a lesson in itself. The Old Johnny's Steak house had great food but the facilities were not welcoming. Ambience and food is everything! I would love to see Dolly and Joe's be a Toledo gem!

SMELLS
By friendlyguy419 on 03/18/2007
When you walk in the door you smell stale urinal cakes and that smell follows you through the restaurant. You just can't escape it! They need to tear the place down. We were there in the evening and asked for our prime rib rare and got them medium. Sent them back only to have them RETURNED TO US telling us that they were the last of the meat for the day! WHY?!! Never again.
