The cluster of independently owned local restaurants battling chain operations for consumer dollars just gained an ally, one with a most appropriate name. The owners of this new Uptown eatery espouse fidelity to the community rather than an out-of-town headquarters. A classic American menu and a sharp, art-deco/modern interior design may help Calhoun Square's quest to become the number one dining and nightlife venue in the Known Universe. Food choices include fresh seafood, steaks and pastas, of course, with a surprising effort by the place to keep entree prices under the $20 barrier. But check this out: goulash and other Midwest hot-dish standbys are also listed to bring back -- or create -- your nostalgia for Minnesota family meals. (Expect these favorites to taste more eclectically influenced than the originals.) A notable assortment of wines, martinis and beers are available to augment your experience, as is a popular happy hour. And brunch hounds can anticipate Saturday and Sunday opportunities for trying this new spot.
