Right in the heart of Dupont Circle is the bar with the world's largest beer selection. With more than 1,000 names on its dauntingly thick menu at any given time, Brickskeller claims to have served more than 4,000 different brands and styles of beer since its debut in 1957. Now, for the first time ever, it serves beer on tap. With eleven types available, their selection of brew in kegs promises to be as extensive and ever-changing as their bottled variety. Brickskeller is one of the most popular places to wet your whistle in DC, attracting crowds of all types, from laid-back college regulars to tourists, to the occasional parade of bachelorettes. The atmosphere is anything but humble, with red brick walls covered in beer paraphernalia, but we don't expect humility from a bar that's mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records. Most beers are under $5 each, so you can afford to sample. Take your taste buds on a trip around the world with a sweet Chilean Imperial, a light Czech Pilsner, a rich Norwegian Porter and a mysterious Zimbabwean Zambezi. Of course, you can also enjoy plenty of bubbling froth without leaving home -- there are roughly 350 American beers on the menu -- but if you order a Bud or Miller Light, you probably won't make many new friends (beer or human). -- Jamy Bond

loved it

i went there last friday night and had a blast. The bartenders were so helpful. I'm not much of a beer drinker but they were more then willing to help me find a beer that I would enjoy. It's also not that expensive. After drinking 4 beers my bill was still just around 17 dollars. I would go back any weekend and I recommend that others go there as well.

Very hit or miss

I've definitely had a mixed bag of good and bad experiences there, yet I admit that I keep coming back for the beer and the great atmosphere. Most of the time, they are indeed out of a great number of beers on the menu, but, if they don't have the exact ale or pilsner you want, they almost always have something very similar to it. I really dig the laidback, neighborhood bar atmosphere. The biggest complaint is the service. Most of the waitresses are flat out bitchy, not even attempting to fake politeness, and the service is slow a vast majority of the time. I have had a few good waiters, but the bad experiences far outnumber the good. Overall, its definitely one of the better, more laidback bars in DC. If they can make an upgrade in some select (mainly female) members of the wait staff, the place would probably be unbeatable.

Out of Stock?
By jaimshynba on 02/16/2007
I've had a few experiences here, and almost every time, the beers I ask for are out of stock. The overwhelming selection becomes an albatross for the wait staff. There is no way to memorize which 600 of the 1500 beers they have left. So, there is a lot of running back and forth and waitresses giving you beers that you did not ask for and you accepting them just to end the dance. Food's great, but call me when you have a better inventory system.

Atmosphere is everything

This is probably the best bar to have a chill night. I go there often and I'll grant you there are many occasions when their beer selection is running low because they order beer quarterly. In addition there are nights when a waitress will just plain suck. Despite this the atmosphere of the place is amazing. The place is the definition of nostalgic. They have beer cans of beer no one has heard of in 30+ years (including a can of Super G brand beer). In addition the beer selection is the best I’ve ever seen, even on a crappy night. You should always have a beer lined up to order and then a backup in case they are out of your first choice. The food is pretty good and the price is even better. If you’re looking for a laid back night, this is the place.
