Best Westerns are always reliable and affordable places to stay, but not all of them are "Best." As they say in real estate, "location, location, location." The Skyline Inn may have attractive amenities, but the area around it in southwest Washington does not. The Best Western Skyline Inn technically may be situated "just five blocks" south of the US Capitol, as its brochure promises. But those five blocks are very very long, and they traverse an area under a dark overpass you wont want to walk through alone, especially in the evening. Single travelers, couples and families with young children (or curious teens) might want to look elsewhere. Many planning trips to the nations capital might be intrigued by the hotels free enclosed parking, a rarity in Washington. But, again, driving alone through the neighborhood surrounding the Skyline Inn wouldnt be recommended, especially at night. The hotel also offers parking for tour buses, perhaps the best groups to consider this destination. Well-chaperoned groups with experienced guides and firm itineraries during daytime hours might find this hotel a good bet. About half of the hotels refurbished rooms face have quite a view of the Capitol dome. All rooms feature cable TV and voice mail (refrigerators, hair dryers, irons and boards can be made available on request). If you choose this hotel, be sure to ask about various special rate packages for those over 55, airline partner plans, and other discounted packages. - Tracey Meloni
