This private club, devoted to the "advancement of its members in science, literature, and art" as well as to their "mutual improvement by social intercourse," has been a haven for DC's elite since John Wesley Powell founded it in 1878. The club has strict injunctions against business being conducted openly on the premises, but many regard membership as a definite career advancement move. (And members can rent private conference rooms for business meetings--lawyer Alan Ginsburg, a member of a different club which has a reciprocal arrangement with the Cosmos Clob, upset some members last year when he did just that, meeting with his notorious client Monica Lewinsky and attracting a media frenzy to the Cosmos Club's respectable front door). Cosmos offers typical club activities and amenities such as dining rooms, lounges, dances, music, and games, all in expensively furnished rooms in an elegant Beaux-Arts building near Dupont Circle. It also has a substantial intellectual component, housing a library complete with professional librarian, and offering programs such as book discussions (often including the featured book's author), lectures by experts in various fields, and political discussions led by politicians. Sound good? Too bad--the Cosmos Club is open only to members and their guests, though you might be able to get a tour by calling up and saying that you are, for instance, writing something about the club . . . . - Gwendolyn Bradley
