While the Hawk 'n' Dove only rated a 90-second appearance on the television series 'The West Wing,' it has beckoned thirsty patrons into its dark wood-paneled interior for nearly four decades. This former saltwater taffy store and carriage repair shop is the favored Hill watering hole of congressional staffers and middle management government employees looking for a quick nip on their way home to the 'burbs. Far more doves than hawks belly up to the central rectangular bar (one of four), which is divided in two parts by a half wall lined with bottles. The bar banter is always friendly -- at times veering into politics, but more often about sports. Popular barkeep Paul Maher is skillful at bridging the generation gap between the regulars and the twentysomething crowd that goes wild for the $1 plate of barbecue wings and $2 bottles of Bud. The more mature crowd becomes scarce when the DJ starts cranking the tunes upstairs, which suits everyone just fine. -- Elisabeth Frater

Trouble with a "CAPITOL" T...
By JNSapienza on 09/25/2008
When a decorated Marine Corps Captain and Sergeant are not admitted because they are military then something is seriously wrong here. Many reports are coming back on this place as noted in some of the blogs above. Most are extremely negative. DEFINITELY A PLACE TO AVOID !

I'm not going back
By bradleytrefz on 10/22/2006
Went for Lunch on Sunday afternoon - Service was awful - FOOD WAS DANGEROUS! - Ordered a Burger (well done) with Onion rings - The burger was RAW! When I sent it back I got the same burger back cooked to the consistency of charcoal with a new bun that looked like someone had stepped on it. Waitstaff seemed angry about the whole thing. Anyway I didn't eat it, at least they didn't charge me. Needless to say I won't be back. (As a side note - from a Texan point of view - they had "Shiner Bok" [sic] on the menu but the waiter informed me - "they don't brew it anymore - they went out of business." I assured him that the little brewery in Shiner was going quite strong and had just celebrated its 97th anniversary.)

Good Food!
By tolonghair on 10/13/2005
The Burgers at the hawk and Dove are outstanding and the Seafood is 'Great' too. I read some of the other 'Ratings' and can't understand the negative comments. I must admit that sometimes the 'Jar Heads' get a little 'Rowdy', but that's the 'Nature of the Beast'. What is surprising is that they found their way there, as Marines are known for getting lost. (Army Joke) I like a Bar, Pub, Grill, or Restaurant with a good 'Neighborhood Atmosphere', and the Hawk and Dove has just that. The Staff and people frequenting the Hawk and Dove are friendly, and that makes the experience worth the trip. However, if your too 'Snobbish', Uppity', or expecting the 'Ritz', the Hawk and Dove won't be your type of place to go. But if your are like me, enjoy people, like a good time, and good food ... Stop on In!
