Situated diagonally across Massachusetts Avenue about a block from the Morrison-Clark Inn, is the equally elegant Henley Park Hotel. Once housing a fashionable Washington apartment dwelling, the circa 1918 Tudor-style building has been recently transformed into yet another charming, European-style downtown hotel. Arriving at the Henley Park is like stepping into an English Inn or a 19th century romance novel, a throwback to a graceful, bygone era. The foyer is richly decorated with antiques, mirrors and paintings, Floors are parquet and 118 gargoyles peek playfully through skylights. Besides housing a gourmet restaurant called Coeur de Lion (where the skylights are), the hotel features the cozy Wilkes Room where afternoon tea features homemade scones and all the trimmings. Marley's Lounge, with its nifty, marble-topped bar and leaded glass windows, offers live entertainment--usually mellow jazz--each day as well as dancing on Friday and Saturday evenings. The hotel's 96 guest rooms and suites are beautifully appointed with antiques and artifacts.
