Sleek, unique and contemporarily beautiful, the George is a bold and delightful contrast to Washington's many ornate, extravagantly decorated hotels. No one entering the glass, steel and limestone facade would guess that this structure was built in 1928. The hotel's renovation transformed the George into perhaps the most popular hotel on Capitol Hill. Its soaring two- story lobby is overlooked by glassed-in boardrooms overhead and punctuated by a striking grand piano. Comfortable furniture with clean lines in pleasing shades of sand, beige and taupe invite you to sit and relax, basking in the unique mix of artwork. 139 guest rooms are custom-designed to provide comfort and ease. Special built-in cherry cabinets conceal ample closet space, a large TV/VCR, a refreshment center/minibar, and a coffee maker. CD players are available. The business traveler will appreciate rooms specially equipped with large granite desks, high-speed internet access, dual-line telephones, data/fax modem ports, and voice mail systems. Everyone will love the oversized beds, cool and gentle colors, and lounge chairs with ottomans. The George features a terrific contemporary French bistro -- Bistro Bis -- which alone would be worth the price of admission -- don't miss the Sunday brunch. A cigar-and-billiard room continues the hip, young theme. A health club with lockers and steam rooms is available to guests, offering a relaxing break between the day's activities and the evening's promises. Our first president's name has been attached to a number of Washington institutions, but none as up- to-date as this. The George says it offers "an exciting neo-modern alternative to Washington's traditional style hotels." Indeed, it does. It also offers a great location near Union Station, the US Capitol, and all of Washington's finest tourist spots. - Tracey Meloni
