Great

Red Ginger has such a relaxing, chill atmosphere that is one of a kind. It takes you away from the stresses in DC. Softly playing reggae in the background, and Caribbean colors of red, green, and yellow through out the restaurant; if it wasn’t for the snow outside, I would have thought I was close to the bluish green Caribbean waters. The plates showed presentation of a remarkable chef and unlike some upscale restaurants the proportions were enough to fill up on.

Wonderful Restaurant!!

I LOVE eating at this restaurant. My favorite entrees include the lamb shank, which has been cooked for hours in a wine sauce. The meat just falls off the bone, no knife necessary. And the snapper which is seared in a very hot pan so the skin is very crisp, served in a tangy sauce. For dessert, the warm flourless chocolate cake served warm with warm chocolate drizzled over it with cool vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. The chef is super about accommodating my dietary restrictions too. I cannot eat wheat (I have celiac disease) and he tailors the entrees so I can eat them. I heartily recommend this restaurant.

Best new restaurant in Washington!
By tmemedia on 06/27/2004
I don't know when the AOL review was written, but it's out of date. There is a new chef at Red Ginger, and the food is out of this world, and reasonably priced. The wine list is NOT primarily European, but has the tastiest Argentinian whites and reds I've had in a long time. At a recent dinner, we had the Jamaican Jerk chicken "lollipops" with lime chipotle sauce -- Fabulous! Order two or you will be fighting for the last one. The bread is fresh baked and comes with a slather of lentils, artichoke hearts, garlic, olive oil and onions. We order two bread baskets and I don't know how many dishes of the slather. Entrees were curry oxtail stew (an amazing $15) -- to die for! Not too spicy for those of you with tender palates, but flavorful! Even the saffron rice and pinto beans that came with it was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin in Rum Sauce with mashed sweet potatoes in whiskey sauce and sauteed collard greens ($17!). We both licked that plate CLEAN. I like my pork medium rare, and that's JUST the way it came. I never get that at any restaurant in the city -- just a hint of pink inside but cooked, not raw. We also ordered a side dish of Quinoa pumpkin salad. Very fresh and delicious. Dessert was shared: LIght and airy coconut beignets dusted with powdered sugar and served in a huge margarita glass of homemade vanilla ice cream. I'm telling you, this is the best food I've gotten in this city in a LONG time, and I'll be back. Service was NOT at all slow as the above review suggests, it was perfect and quite speedy actually. The waitstaff knew all about the menu and wines, too, which was great and very helpful.
