With a covered outdoor seating area that's larger than the inside of the restaurant, Mi Rancho is a lively warm-weather place that almost intones, "Mi Rancho es su rancho." But even on chilly days (when the patio becomes enclosed and heated), the Silver Spring eatery and cantina shows its Mexican mojo with food that outshines its so-so, casual surroundings. The tough to resist thin and crispy chips and the fresh-made with a hint of sweetness salsa keep your mouth from watering while pondering a sizable menu of standard Tex-Mex dishes -- fajitas, tacos, enchiladas -- and seafood specialties. The portions are generous without being ostentatious, but the desserts can put you over the top. Flan, ice cream and a handful of other options arrive in entree-size amounts. Mi Rancho is family-friendly, with kids gathering around to watch tortillas being made in the front of the restaurant and a relaxed atmosphere and attitude. -- Kathleen Neary

Not bad. If I'm hungry for Tex-Mex and don't want to drive far from the SS area, Mi Rancho is the place to go. But it can't hold a stick to the Cactus Cantina in DC.

Sub-par at best

I was very disappointed in my dining experience at Mi Rancho. I had heard great reviews about the food, but found my chicken enchilada, pork tamale, and beef taco dish to be quite tasteless. The salsa was sweet and very salty. The beans were runny and flavorless, the rice had a funny burned taste, and the pork tamale just tasted horrible. The chicken was dry and unseasoned and the enchilada sauce was just passable. The saving grace of the meal was the dessert: the sopopillas were heaven, the ice cream empanadas were delicious, and the flan was creamy, sweet and light as a cloud on your tongue. Overall, I would not recommend this restaurant for entrees. But if you're in the mood for some heavenly desserts, by all means spoil yourself.

The best of Silver Spring

Really, really good food. The chips are better than any I've ever tasted. And the margaritas are wonderful. And the fajitas are super. The host gives us a gracious greeting every time we visit.
