The Modern will be closed due to water damage until approximately Aug. 17, 2006. You could almost miss this place while walking down M Street. Amid the rowdy college bars, multi-national restaurants, and techno-blaring shops, Modern's sleek, understated exterior is refreshing if inconspicuous. As one of the city's newest hipster lounges, Modern plays the hipster role, but with a friendlier edge. Sure, it doesn't open "to the public" until 10PM on some nights, plus it has a VIP area and a dress code. But there's a little less attitude here: You can sit in those VIP tables when empty, the drinks aren't outrageously overpriced (they aren't cheap either) and the doorman doesn't flaunt a flagrant hipper-than-thou attitude. Lounge scenesters will love the modernist decor and clubby atmosphere here. The gem of the subterranean club is its circular sunken bar surrounded by low ottomans; it looks like something out of 'A Clockwork Orange.' The soundtrack ranges from deep house on weeknights to hip-hop and an eclectic pop mix on the weekends, further softening its hipster edge. With its slightly sophisticated sensibility, Modern is a welcome change for those wearied by Georgetown's college scene. If you're part of that baseball-hat-backwards-and-sweatshirt scene, however, you may be turned away from that easy-to-miss door.

Overpriced
By mcnulty6807 on 01/07/2006
Sorry editor, but your review is all wrong. The drinks @ 10.00 each is too much for me, a college student. The door admission price of $30.00 is too much for me. The door man thinks he is better than everyone in there. Although the people who go there are cool, and the atmosphere and location are great, you see less of the "ghetto" men trying to grab women.

Rip-OFF!!

This is absolutely the worst bar I have ever been to. The staff is completely stuck up and rude and the doormen look down upon everyone. I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to go there. The $20 at the door is ridiculous, and when you get downstairs, don't be expecting much. Yes, the bar is round, but the decor is cheezy, the girls are fake and everyone has an attitude. If I wanted to sit in a booth I'd have gone to Denny's. Lame, lame, lame. I've been to England, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii, San Diego, San Francisco, Florida, Chicago, Hong Kong, Toronto and a few others and this is the worst bar/club I have been to.

A tad on the small side but pretty good amount of room for dancing. They played a nice variety of music too from retro rock to modern hip-hop. We went for New Years and had a great time. The bartenders really are the ones that make that place work. I think they could improve on the decor a bit though- it has potential but they need to do something with that floor.
