Rate and Write a Review Known as the Sheraton Carlton until recently, this glamorous hotel is well known to visitors despite minimal advertising and several name changes. Small wonder - centrally located near the White House, the business district and wonderful shopping, the very elegant St. Regis is a perfect destination for statesmen, businessmen and pleasure travelers. This ornate hotel resembles a gilded palace inside, with Louis XVI furnishings and elaborate moldings throughout. The quiet, competent staff is committed to pleasing all guests in an unobtrusive way, and the concierge services are second to none, solving problems and easing your stay in every way. The St. Regis is not for everyone. Its formal opulence may make casual family travelers hesitate (when you call to reserve, ask about programs for children before you decide. In its previous incarnation, the hotel had a much- appreciated kids program). While every effort is made to make all guests welcome, its not always easy to feel at ease in such an elaborate setting while wearing Bermuda shorts and a "Where's the beef?" T-shirt. Guest rooms (183, as well as 14 suites) offer every possible amenity, including elegant bathrooms, in-room modems, voice mail, and gracious, comfortable appointments. A fine fitness facility and valet parking are available, along with virtually every other service you might want. Replacing the Lespinasse is Timothy Dean Restaurant and Bar, which offers contemporary American cuisine and takes advantage of the bounty of the Chesapeake region, with French inspiration. The St. Regis is a beautiful, formal, elegant and top-of-the-line hotel. For those who want a very special experience, this could be the place. -- Tracey Meloni
