There are many good reasons to visit the Tabard Inn. Among these are the romantically lit lounge with its cozy fireplace and the comfy dining room with its Shaker furniture. Sunday evenings the lounge is packed with people enjoying a weekly string jazz performance. The small, well-stocked bar hosts a rotating crop of local professionals and political types, visitors and couples on dates. There's also the brick-walled garden with its tangle of trees, vines and flowers that can make you feel like you're a million miles away from Washington's chaos. You almost forget about the food -- the inn has that, too. Start out your repast with a gratin of lump crabmeat with black trumpet mushrooms, spinach and garlic confit. Move on to a comfort-food main course: grilled veal chop with mashed potatoes, mushrooms and beet greens. Everything on the menu is fair game, but half the reason you visit Tabard Inn is for the atmosphere, especially during winter when you can order a glass of port, curl up on the sofa with your sweetie and stare into the crackling fire. They'll have to kick you out at closing time. -- Jon Bowen

My engagement
By katja311 on 01/25/2008
Let me say that this is a dinner I will never forget! My husband took me here for dinner on Valentines Day. We got engaged, had a wonderful meal ( I thought) . The service was great the atmosphere was comfortable and I was on cloud nine, until I got home. In the middle of telling my best friend I was going to get married I started to feel sick to my stomach. Two hours later I was still in the bathroom unable to leave for fear I would throw up again. YES the Tabard Inn gave me food poisoning on my engagement night!

I have eaten there many times and it is my girlfriend's favorite! A great "First Date" or Anniversary Place. Never had a bad meal. Menu changes frequently but is always interesting.

I want to live there!
By pjtav on 10/21/2006
The menu said the Inn has been the setting for a number of literary works, including "The Pelican Brief." I don't know about that, but I do know that four of us were there last night, and we loved it. The atmosphere was friendly and cozy without being crowded--I want to live there! The food was excellent. My seared scallops were te best I've had anywhere, and my companions really enjoyed the roast pork, prime rib steak, and lobster entrees they ordered. We spent just over $60 each, including drinks--four excellent glasses of wine and a Bombay Gin martini--tax and tips. We will definitely go back! (I want to live there.)
