One of the most comfy, unpretentious lounges around, in spite (or perhaps because) of the killer martinis, red velvet drapings and funky lighting. Co-owner Chris Connelly says he bought the place because it was the "most welcoming" bar space he'd ever seen. Since taking it over, he has worked hard to make it a venerable venue for regional music. Better than adequate evidence of this: A Velvet Lounge-sponsored CD compilation of local bands, the installation of a good, high-tech sound system and the welcome addition of air conditioning (great for bands and fans alike). Tuesdays are open mic nights, while Wednesdays are currently devoted to the electronic/experimental/ambient music scene. Alternative rock bands rule the weekends, with monthly all-ages showcases to encourage bands with younger followings. Sunday through Thursday, there's no cover in the downstairs bar and Chris welcomes eavesdroppers to give a listen before paying for tickets to the upstairs show. Velvet is located a block from Washington's bigger, better-known 9:30 Club.

Velvet lounge is not a gay bar
By fuzzfoot on 03/29/2007
The reviewers that mention "young gay boys with attitude" are thinking of "Velvet Nation" a gay dance night that took place at another club. Velvet Lounge is a small indie rock club that has cool new bands from all over the world.

The new stage puts Velvet over the top as my favorite place to see music in DC. Good stuff here.
